Ways to improve students' success in a math's class.
1. Build confidence-Talk About Failure. While getting a failing mark on a test or a project can be a blow to a child’s self-esteem and confidence, in the overall learning process, failing a test or a project can be a valuable lesson for students. In school and life, setbacks happen. When they do, they also present opportunities to explore different options, try new paths, and implement new strategies. Knowing that failure is a normal part of the learning process is key to a positive learning attitude. While the idea of failing can seem scary, it helps students develop learning skills, boost their determination, and build self-esteem and confidence.
2. Encourage questioning and make space for curiosity Students are naturally curious! Find ways ignite their curiosity with fun activities.
3.Share positive attitudes about math's-A positive attitude toward math boosts the brain’s memory center and predicts math performance independent of factors such as a child’s IQ, a Stanford study has found.
4. Include math games-Math games are a tried-and-true method for bringing excitement and competition to your classroom. For example,
- Math stations filled with number blocks and other manipulatives during play-based learning activities for younger students.
5.Use real objects-There are plenty of math tools that can help students picture abstract math concepts in the real world, including:
- Play money
- Abacus for counting and number sense
- Spheres, prisms and other shapes for geometry
- Manipulatives like base ten blocks, number lines and clocks
- Small objects like gummy bears, buttons or rocks for pattern making
- Flashcards for subtraction, addition, multiplication and division facts, or other math vocabulary terms.
